CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Trent’s eyes cracked open, wincing at the harsh sunlight streaming through the windows, so bright it practically seared his retinas. Pushing himself up on the couch he’d been dozing on, he stared at the remains of the party all around him.

The new hires had drank and celebrated themselves into oblivion. There were empty and broken bottles lying everywhere, along with unconscious and sleeping men in chairs, settees and sprawled on the floor. The room was mostly quiet, the still air broken only by intermittent snoring. But as Trent watched and listened, he heard the steady thrum of the yacht’s powerful engines as they propelled the boat forward. We’re on the move, he thought. Time to check in.

Rising, he picked his way through the debris until he reached the door. Sliding it open, he poked his head out and looked up and down the hallway, exiting only when he was sure it was empty. He crept down the narrow, wood-paneled passageway, freezing only once, when he heard footsteps on the roof above him. The lack of activity was a bit disturbing; Trent had gotten the impression that Lee Ming ran a tighter ship than this. However, if it also made his job easier, he certainly wasn’t going to complain.

Searching for a place to report in undiscovered, Trent had a brainstorm. He located the nearest bathroom, evicted the unfortunate soul who had taken refuge there, claiming he was about to puke and sending the poor guy tottering off down the hall, and locked the door. When he was sure no one was around, he pulled out his satellite phone and dialed Stony Man headquarters.

“Kurtzman here,” the gruff voice of Aaron “the Bear” Kurtzman answered. “Good to hear from you, Alpha. You comfortable?”

“Yes, but I don’t have much time. The head player here is a guy named Lee Ming, a known pirate in the area. After picking up ten new men, the ship’s on the move.”

“I know, we’ve got you in sight the entire way.”

“They’re going after two cargo ships, but I don’t know which ones or why yet. The leader isn’t giving his crew a lot of information, but I know it’s going to happen sometime in the next forty-eight to seventy-two hours.”

“And you have no idea of the target or purpose yet?”

Trent tried not to make his response too sarcastic. “I’ve been on board for just over nine hours. It might take a bit more time to get them to trust me that much.”

“We’re aware of that, however, the limited time frame and wide coverage area means that there’s a strong chance we might not be able to intercept their operation until it’s already begun.”

“Understood, and as soon as I know, you’ll know.”

“I’m sure. Get whatever information you can, and get it to us ASAP.”

“Right—” Trent was interrupted by a fist pounding on the door.

“Hurry the fuck up in there!”

“Alpha out.” Trent flushed the toilet and shoved his tiny phone in his pocket. He took his time washing his hands, then opened the folding door to see Guong on the other side.
